Beyond the First Number: When Guru Nanak Dev Ji Met Pir Dastgir in Baghdad

The travel chronicles of the first spiritual master of the Sikhs feature many remarkable interfaith dialogues. During his extensive travels, known historically as Udasis, he visited various global centers of spirituality. One of the most significant destinations on this journey was the historic city of Baghdad. Consequently, the historic meeting of Guru Nanak Dev Ji in Baghdad remains a profound chapter in spiritual history. During this visit, a legendary theological discourse took place with a powerful local leader known as Pir Dastgir.

Understanding the Lineage of Dastgir

To fully understand this historic meeting, one must look at the true origin of the title. Many people believe that Dastgir was a personal name. However, historical records clarify that Dastgir is a Persian title meaning “one who holds the hand.” It represents a highly respected lineage of spiritual masters rather than an individual. The personal name of the Pir residing in Baghdad at the time was Syed Muhammad Qadir Jalal. He was the eighth spiritual successor in this illustrious lineage.

The very first master to receive this title was Sheikh Agan Omar during the ancient reign of the Shah of Samarkand. According to historical accounts, the Shah once witnessed the ancient master digging a grave for a fallen soldier. The master looked at the deceased warrior and asked why his immense earthly strength, powerful bow, and legendary sword skills could not save him from the grave. This profound display of spiritual humility deeply impressed the Shah, who immediately became his disciple. This powerful truth reminds humanity of a timeless spiritual law preserved in Gurbani, which states that everyone must eventually leave for their true home, everyone must face the final departure, and blessed are those soul-brides who are deeply in love with their Divine Husband. In the original Gurmukhi scripture, this is recorded as

Centuries later, the eighth successor of this lineage prepared to meet a traveler from India.

The Great Meeting in Baghdad

When Guru Nanak Dev Ji arrived in the city, his unique appearance and deeply divine chanting instantly attracted the local population. This growing spiritual influence soon reached the ears of Pir Dastgir. The Pir desired to meet the visitor. However, he also wished to test the depth of the Guru’s knowledge and his unique method of explaining cosmic truths. Therefore, the Pir requested a formal meeting. Upon greeting the Guru, the local master stepped forward to present three profound spiritual questions to test his divine insight.

The First Question: What Lies Before the Creator?

The Pir began his test by asking about the nature of the divine. He asked about the existence of the Creator. Guru Ji immediately replied that the Creator is absolute, formless, and uniquely One. Subsequently, the Pir tried to confuse the narrative by asking a classic theological riddle. He asked what existed in the cosmos before that single Creator.

Instead of giving a complex philosophical lecture, Guru Nanak Dev Ji utilized a beautifully simple practical demonstration. Guru ji asked the Pir to bring ten gold coins to the court. The Pir quickly gathered the coins and placed them on the floor. Guru Ji then instructed the Pir to count the coins out loud.

The Lesson of the Gold Coins

The Pir pointed to the first coin and naturally began counting from the number one. However, Guru Ji immediately stopped him and stated that the count was completely wrong. Confused, the Pir restarted his count from the number one. Once again, Guru Ji interrupted him and declared the count incorrect. After this pattern repeated a third time, the frustrated Pir asked what mistake he was making.

Guru Ji smiled gently and instructed the Pir to begin his count before the number one. The Pir replied that nothing is mathematically visible or present before the number one. Consequently, Guru Ji explained that this exact mathematical truth applies to the cosmos. Nothing exists before the absolute One.

To illustrate the primordial state of existence before creation, Guru Ji shared the profound revelation later recorded in Raag Maru. He explained that for countless ages, there was only utter darkness, with no earth, no sky, and only the infinite Divine Will. There was neither day nor night, neither moon nor sun, as the Creator sat alone in a profound, absolute void of silent meditation. In the sacred Gurmukhi script, this cosmic truth reads as This beautifully proved to the Pir that the formless Creator has no beginning, no mathematical predecessor, and no prior source.

The Lasting Impact of the Dialogue

This simple yet brilliant explanation completely dissolved the Pir’s intellectual arrogance. He realized that he was not speaking to an ordinary traveler, but to a deeply enlightened soul. Ultimately, this legendary discourse highlights the core essence of the early spiritual journey. Guru Nanak Dev Ji did not travel to conquer lands or debate for victory. Instead, he traveled to build bridges of understanding and illuminate the singular truth that unites all humanity under one divine reality.
